Red Bull Sound Select: Block Party Gives You Wings [Nas Media]

Saturday June 17th – Red Bull Sound Select threw quite the block party this past Saturday at the Drake Commissary in Toronto. The day party was scheduled to start at 3PM, however Toronto’s weather had something else planned for the city. There was an issued tornado warning for about two hours over the city but thankfully the Red Bull gods came through and brought some sun over the 6ix, with only a couple hours of the block party being delayed.

Photos by Harrison Haines.

As the rain clouds began to part and the sun started to shine through, more and more guests started to arrive, ready to get their groove on to some great local acts and performances. Collectif Nude curated the event and they did a great job with all of the decorations, merchandise on site, and bringing their own style to the party.

There were featured performances by MADDEE, Shagabond, Ralph, and Young Clancy. All of these artists brought a great crowd in front of their stage and brought some wicked vibes to the block party filled with positive energy and created a chill atmosphere with their upbeat pop and synth rhythms. There were also three DJ’s Jayemkayem, Max Melanin, and Ganbei, who brought some great hip-hop and deep house tunes for the crowd in between sets.

Towards the evening, more and more guests started to show up and the entire lot was filled with smiling faces and happy dancers. This Red Bull Sound Select show was a complete success and we’re glad that we got to be a part of it! We’re hoping Red Bull Sound Select visits our city more often, they sure know how to throw a party.

The Record Company Announce Shows in Montreal and Toronto + Release New Single ‘Off The Ground’

“…showing off a down-and-dirty sound and megawatts of onstage intensity.”
Rolling Stone

“Raw emotion, dedication, honesty and hard work. These are just some of the words that best describe Los Angeles rock trio The Record Company.”Paste

Toronto, ON – March 15th, 2016 – Los Angeles-based, GRAMMY-nominated breakout band, The Record Company, are set to play their first Canadian dates since the release of their debut album, Give It Back To You. The group will be supporting John Mayer on his Montreal and Toronto tour stops in May. See below for complete details.

Give It Back To You experienced great success since its release in February 2016 on Concord Records. After 42 weeks strong on both the Billboard Top New Artist Heatseekers Chart and the Nielsen Alternative New Artist Chart, the roots/rock trio, The Record Company, scored a GRAMMY Award nomination for the album in the category of Best Contemporary Blues Album. Today, the album has moved over 4,500 units in Canada, including streams, and now the band will bring their live set to local fans.

The band, comprised of Chris Vos (guitar, lead vocals, harmonica), Alex Stiff (bass, guitar, vocals) and Marc Cazorla (drums, piano, vocals) – unleashed its debut album, Give It Back to You, on February 12th , 2016, and immediately struck a power chord nationwide. The album’s first single, Off The Ground, garnered extensive airplay in the alternative formats, achieving the coveted #1 AAA spot, where it remained for two consecutive weeks. The single was recently featured in a Hockey Night In Canada montage that aired on March 11th.  Their latest single, Baby I’m Broken, premiered on Sirius XM’s Spectrum, and was serviced to radio today.

The Record Company’s popular success has been matched by enthusiastic and unanimous critical acclaim. “Caught halfway between the stomp of mid-century rock & roll and the soulful kick of Delta blues, the Record Company kick up a raw, rootsy racket,” raved Rolling Stone. “The blues may be nothing new, but the Record Company wring new life out of old traditions.” Entertainment Weekly wrote. “The scuzzy, 10-track set meshes the group’s biggest influences—the early electric blues rock n’ roll of John Lee Hooker, staccato lyrical delivery akin to The Stooges frontman Iggy Pop, and Rolling Stones-style grooves.”

What’s more, The Record Company have rocked the airwaves with a series of high profile TV appearances, including CBS’ Late Show with Stephen Colbert and TBS’ Conan, not to mention countless radio sessions and live concert broadcasts on SiriusXM, NPR’s World Café Live, and Chicago’s WXRT.

JFDR and The Floating Points Bring an Electric Show to The Danforth Music Hall

Tuesday, April 11 – JFDR and The Floating Points made their stop in our city of Toronto during the U.S. tour to give their fans an incredible performance at The Danforth Music Hall.
We sent our photographer Harrison Haines to cover this show and he came back with nothing but great things to say about the show and how unique the performances were.
“The show went great! JFDR and Floating Points both had awesome performances. JFDR was a solo artist playing the guitar, singing the vocals and also using a mixer to add more sounds to her show. She had a very unique and serene like sound.  A great show to go to and just relax and listen.
Floating Points were a four piece band (a guitar, bass, drummer and pianist/mixer).  They were definitely a louder band than JFDR with the drummer having crazy solos throughout. They also had a wild light show in the middle of the stage throughout the whole show.  A small box was shooting lines and lasers onto a circle  at the back of the stage.  Every spot on the circle that was touched by the lasers would stay lit up until the end of the song at which point a sacred geometry piece would be recognizable on the circle. It was very cool to see!  It was almost like a hologram.
The venue was awesome it filled up instantly. It was a large hall with very tall ceilings made for the perfect acoustics for the unique sounds the mixer from Floating Points would constantly send through the speakers.”
If you’re looking to see a psychedelic and unique show, then JFDR and The Floating Points is one for the books!

TORONTO, ON – Tuesday, April 4, 2017 – The 2017 JUNO Awards in Ottawa was a weekend of celebration, with Indoor Recess management/publicity client, The Strumbellas, winning Single of the Year for their monster hit, Spirits; publicity client, A Tribe Called Red being awarded Producer of the Year; and publicity client, Grimes, taking home a Video of the Year nod for Kill vs Maim. The Strumbellas and A Tribe Called Red both captivated the audience at the live award show broadcast on Sunday, April 2, with stunning live performances. The weekend kicked off with performances by publicity clients, and Electronic Album of the Year nominees, Harrison, and Holy Fuck, at Ottawa’s legendary, Zaphod Beeblebrox.

“It was a whirlwind of a weekend and I couldn’t be more proud,” reflected Joanne Setterington, Founder of Indoor Recess. “The Strumbellas and A Tribe Called Red were a huge part of the weekend and kept us on our toes!  It was awesome to celebrate along with them and all of the nominees and folks from the industry.”

Indoor Recess goes west, signing Vernon, BC five-piece alt-rock band, //AMISTAD//,  for a worldwide management deal.

“I’ve been talking with these guys for a little while and feel ridiculously excited to be working with them,” commented Joanne. “They’re amazing songwriters, strong performers and all five of them are tremendously dedicated to this band. Hearing songs like Darkerside and Human made my ears perk up right away and as soon as I saw them live, I knew I wanted to manage them.”

The Artist Management / Public Relations hybrid company is pleased to announce that Amanda McCauley has become partner, after spearheading the PR side for the last year.

Aven Hoffarth, who joined the management team a year ago, brings her client, Long Range Hustle, to the roster. Check out the five-piece Toronto indie-rockers’ video for Paddle Away, and catch them live at Grace O’Malleys in Toronto on April 21st for CMW.

“Amanda McCauley has been an integral part of this company for the past seven years,” says Joanne. “She was at the helm of the ship at Sunday’s red carpet at the JUNOs and taught me a thing or two! I’m grateful for and inspired by the leadership role she’s assumed on the PR side over the past year and I thoroughly enjoy talking strategy and planning with her. Aven Hoffarth lives and breathes management and is an absolute natural at it. I’m really honoured that she has brought Long Range Hustle into the family. We are a company of people that love what we do and take pride in the success our artists get to experience. I’m truly excited about the future!”

Cigarettes After Sex hit the Horseshoe Tavern in T.O!

This Texan pop group, Cigarettes After Sex made their way down to our city to one of the most visited concert venues, The Horseshoe Tavern. The show was packed with people from front to back, all the fans excited to see their favourite pop group perform in the 6ix.

The show had a dark vibe to it with minimal use of lights, pyros, and ambience. It was quite authentic in its ways of showcasing the music and talent that this band shares.

Everyone on the dance floor loved the bands edginess and the energy they brought to stage.

In 2016 RollingStone listed them as one of their Ten Artists You Need To Know, calling them “a romantic, wistful Brooklyn band that plays at a heartbroken crawl.” Noisey also praised the group, saying “Cigarettes After Sex’s sound is elemental, hazy, and romantic, but with a noir edge underneath Gonzalez’s androgynous voice.”

The group recently released a new single entitled “K.”Stereogum praised it saying, ” “K.” is a bleary, understated guitar reverie that (gently) impacts like a liquid mix of the Clientele and Red House Painters.”

The band has finished their North American tour but are continuing on their international tour, you can find their tour dates listed below.

Toronto, ON – November 7, 2016 – Toronto artist, JungleManSam, has released his latest single, CPR, which premiered on Irie Magazine. The single is from his forthcoming EP, which will be released in early 2017. CPR was written by JungleManSam, Cameron Breithaupt, and Kirsten Urbas, and produced by Bus Up Shop. The track is an uplifting and unique infusion of reggae and dancehall, with electronic inflections and Latin vibes.

“CPR is one of the first songs that I wrote on my little guitar when I was travelling Peru. There’s been so many times in my life when someone’s beauty has ‘taken my breath away,’ so I thought I would play with that imagery and make the turn of phrase a little darker and weirder,” JungleManSam says of the track’s inspiration. “I recorded a voice-note and sent the song back to Canada and my producer, Ernesto (of Bus Up Shop), sent me back the rough version of the beat that we would build off together with Nick, also of Bus Up Shop. CPR represents the JungleMan sound with pop-inspired hooks, and a Latin-influenced big electronic beat by production team Bus Up Shop.”

JungleManSam is a new breed of musician. Be it solo or backed by a full band, his dynamic sound can be described as a blend of pop, dance, and world music that incorporates elements of Dancehall, Soca, Reggaeton, and Hip Hop.

Growing up in the city of Toronto and playing music since early childhood, JungleManSam (aka Sam Morton) credits his influences to major recording artists such as Major Lazer, Machel Montano, Sean Paul, and of course the legendary Robert Nesta Marley.

Profoundly inspired by his personal adventures throughout Latin America, JungleManSam has crafted a collection of songs that capture both the energy and mystery of the exotic locations he visited during his travels. As a songwriter, he strives to inspire a sense of wanderlust, taking his listeners “there” by sharing the cultural flavours of the places he has been, and the stories of the people he meets. Through the power of technology, an open heart, and the grassroots movements that are reclaiming original and authentic music, JungleManSam is a refreshing infusion of passion, soul, pop, and talent that captivates the heart of his audiences.

In addition to the new single, Cloud Nothings will embark on a lengthy tour next week that will see them hit North America in January and February before heading to Europe in March. While supplies last, fans can head to to pre-order a limited edition t-shirt & deluxe LP, LP or CD bundle.

WATCH: “Internal World” –
About Cloud Nothings:
Dylan Baldi maintains simple, admirable standards in quality. “A thing I like to do with all of my records is drive around with them,” the 25-year-old Cloud Nothings frontman says. “In high school, I would listen to music for hours like that: just driving through the suburbs of Cleveland. And if it sounds good to me in that context and I can think of high school me listening to it and saying, ‘That’s okay,’ I feel good about the record. This is the one that’s felt best.”
“This” is Life Without Sound, the radiant, far-far-better-than-okay fourth full-length his rock outfit has recorded since he began writing and releasing songs on his own under the Cloud Nothings alias in 2008. While its highly acclaimed predecessor – 2014’s Here and Nowhere Else – came together spontaneously, in the little time that touring allowed, Life Without Sound took shape under far less frenetic circumstances.
For more than a year, Baldi was able to write these songs and flesh out them out with his bandmates – drummer Jayson Gerycz and bassist TJ Duke – before they finally joined producer John Goodmanson (Sleater Kinney, Death Cab for Cutie) at Sonic Ranch in El Paso, Texas, for three weeks in March of 2016. The result is Baldi’s most polished and considered work to date, an album that speaks to his evolving gift with melody while also betraying the sort of perspective that time provides. You can hear it in the aerodynamic guitar pop of “Modern Act,” and feel it in the devastating wisdom of “Internal World,” a lullaby-like howler that dwells on “the fact that being yourself can be uncomfortable and even potentially dangerous at times.”
“Generally, it seems like my work has been about finding my place in the world,” Baldi says. “But there was a point in which I realized that you can be missing something important in your life, a part you didn’t realize you were missing until it’s there-hence the title. This record is like my version of new age music,” he adds. “It’s supposed to be inspiring.”
It is.

Holy Holy have today unveiled the video for their latest single, ‘Elevator’, and have recently revealed details of their highly anticipated sophomore LP. The new album, ‘Paint’, is set for release on February 24, 2017, and is available for pre-order now – HERE.

The video was directed by ARIA nominated writer/director, Charlie Ford, (Courtney Barnett, Vance Joy), who also directed the clip for You Cannot Call For Love Like A Dog. Filmed in Sydney, Fordcomments, “The film was inspired by the key themes of memory, history and the undying connection that lovers share”. Timothy Carroll from Holy Holy adds, “The song has a story built into it so for this clip we wanted to just tell that story. So this clip is like a short film based on one night in the lives of two people who are ex-lovers seeing each other for the first time in a couple of years.”

Elevator’ propels the band’s sonic development into a new exploratory territory, with driving guitar lines, arpeggiated synths and a chorus that will not leave your head. It is the second single to be lifted off the forthcoming record, and an electrifying follow up to first single ‘Darwinism’, which reached #1 Most Played on Triple J.

It has been a remarkably eventful year for Holy Holy, who in November finished up an international tour in support of ‘Darwinism’ which included sold out shows all over the world, packed showcases at Reeperbahn festival in Germany, their third sold out London show, and an intimate performance of Darwinism for the world renowned Mahogany Sessions/Distiller Music in the UK and a performance on the DIY stage in Hamburg. Throughout the year the band have also been writing and recording their new LP, eagerly anticipated by both press and fans alike, which will be released in February 2017. Holy Holy’s debut album came in at #11 on the ARIA Chart, and the last few years have seen the band play steadily growing venues to packed out, adoring fans, and has also seen an exciting, much discussed development in the band’s songwriting and direction.

Both “Elevator” and “Darwinism” are eligible for voting in this year’s Triple J Hottest 100. You can vote here –

Praise for Elevator & reviews from their recent international Darwinism tour
“A driving relentless rock banger” – WILD N FREE, UK
“The band’s 2015 debut When The Storms Would Come was one of the most mature, well-crafted releases of the year. If new single Elevator is anything to go by, it sounds like the band is backing it up with another sensational release. The track slowly ascends to the heavens with a joyous guitar solo erupting out of the chorus, providing the song with the fuel needed to shoot onwards to a triumphant finish.” – HOWL & ECHOES
“Elevator is crammed with arpeggiated synth complimented perfectly by strong guitar riffs and a chorus that hasn’t left my head since I first heard it… Like an elevator, this band is ascending into one of the best bands around at the minute.” – MOJO 20, UK
“It’s another stellar slice of indie rock, with shimmery guitars and a chorus that should have you punching your fist in the air.” – SOUNDS OF OZ
“Elevator” is a classic upbeat burner that features swells of guitars and Timothy Carroll’s beautifully rich vocals…. The chorus will ring true of melancholy shoe-gaze rockers The War of Drugs- a substantial progression from Holy Holy’s earlier pastoral-rock sound. (Elevator) – THE AU REVIEW
“Last year saw Holy Holy gain worldwide success with a collection of songs showing raw power and songwriting talent. This talent continues to shine through in their live shows” – CREATION PRESS, UK
“Holy Holy put on a rock performance of biblical proportions. Oscar Dawson’s guitar skills won the night, receiving monumental praise from the bewildered punters with every riff. Holy Holy treated attendants to a lengthy set, energetically orchestrated by lead singer Timothy Carroll.” – THE MUSIC
“In a modern, music industry that is a perpetual fight for life and survival, Holy Holy are armed with adaptations that ensure they stand out from the pack.”  – SCENESTR
“The guitar-driven track, filled with exuberant synths and meticulous drum-work, easily serves the rich upbeat chorus which will immediately get you up on your feet. One or two hip sways to the catchy rhythms and smooth vocals, and you’re being left with a joyous sensation before even realising it.” – GIG GOER

Holy Fuck releases new music video for track ‘Neon Dad’

Holy Fuck has released a brand new music video last week for their new track ‘Neon Dad.’ The track is off their May 2016 release and the video was written, directed and edited by Scott Cudmore.

The band is also touring Canada this month and next, with stops this week in Hamilton and Toronto, followed by shows in Calgary and Saskatoon. Full tour dates listed below.

About Neon Dad (from the band): Neon Dad was written mostly during a rehearsal in Sydney Australia during Laneway festival 2011. It was a rare moment where we went for something mid tempo and melodic. Was it a pop song? a future b side? It pushed the boundaries of our comfort zone. So we pushed back against it, juxtaposing our noisier aesthetic with something uplifting and cathartic. The end result wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration of a few of our friends. It was recorded with Loel Campbell on drums, during a live session at the Banff Centre for the Arts with Shawn Everett engineering. Carmen Elle of the band Diana layered in some perfectly icy vocals, recorded in our basement studio in Toronto. Finally Dave Newfeld gave us this mix, turning this song inside out and exposing it’s psychedelic guts. It still scares us but we like it.

Scott Cudmore made the video. Only he can explain it’s meaning. But to us it feels like a lesson on how Goliaths are more than just biblical giants. These ogres are everywhere, even inside us.

From Cudmore: The song title ‘Neon Dad’ made me think of some kind of psychedelic god, like a patriarchal, biblical God…and then that made me think about the David & Goliath story and what if that happened now, in our modern world? How would the sudden celebrity affect that young man? That was the jumping off point…it’s a bit of the classic fish-out-of-water story mixed with a parody of “lifestyle” culture. The real Goliaths are of our own making.

Upcoming tour dates:

December 16 – Hamilton, ON – The Casbah

December 17 – Toronto, ON – Lee’s Palace

January 20 – Calgary, AB – Big Winter Classic

January 21 – Saskatoon, SK – Amigo’s
