Red Bull Sound Select: Block Party Gives You Wings [Nas Media]

Saturday June 17th – Red Bull Sound Select threw quite the block party this past Saturday at the Drake Commissary in Toronto. The day party was scheduled to start at 3PM, however Toronto’s weather had something else planned for the city. There was an issued tornado warning for about two hours over the city but thankfully the Red Bull gods came through and brought some sun over the 6ix, with only a couple hours of the block party being delayed.

Photos by Harrison Haines.

As the rain clouds began to part and the sun started to shine through, more and more guests started to arrive, ready to get their groove on to some great local acts and performances. Collectif Nude curated the event and they did a great job with all of the decorations, merchandise on site, and bringing their own style to the party.

There were featured performances by MADDEE, Shagabond, Ralph, and Young Clancy. All of these artists brought a great crowd in front of their stage and brought some wicked vibes to the block party filled with positive energy and created a chill atmosphere with their upbeat pop and synth rhythms. There were also three DJ’s Jayemkayem, Max Melanin, and Ganbei, who brought some great hip-hop and deep house tunes for the crowd in between sets.

Towards the evening, more and more guests started to show up and the entire lot was filled with smiling faces and happy dancers. This Red Bull Sound Select show was a complete success and we’re glad that we got to be a part of it! We’re hoping Red Bull Sound Select visits our city more often, they sure know how to throw a party.

JFDR and The Floating Points Bring an Electric Show to The Danforth Music Hall

Tuesday, April 11 – JFDR and The Floating Points made their stop in our city of Toronto during the U.S. tour to give their fans an incredible performance at The Danforth Music Hall.
We sent our photographer Harrison Haines to cover this show and he came back with nothing but great things to say about the show and how unique the performances were.
“The show went great! JFDR and Floating Points both had awesome performances. JFDR was a solo artist playing the guitar, singing the vocals and also using a mixer to add more sounds to her show. She had a very unique and serene like sound.  A great show to go to and just relax and listen.
Floating Points were a four piece band (a guitar, bass, drummer and pianist/mixer).  They were definitely a louder band than JFDR with the drummer having crazy solos throughout. They also had a wild light show in the middle of the stage throughout the whole show.  A small box was shooting lines and lasers onto a circle  at the back of the stage.  Every spot on the circle that was touched by the lasers would stay lit up until the end of the song at which point a sacred geometry piece would be recognizable on the circle. It was very cool to see!  It was almost like a hologram.
The venue was awesome it filled up instantly. It was a large hall with very tall ceilings made for the perfect acoustics for the unique sounds the mixer from Floating Points would constantly send through the speakers.”
If you’re looking to see a psychedelic and unique show, then JFDR and The Floating Points is one for the books!

“Amanda McCauley has been an integral part of this company for the past seven years,” says Joanne. “She was at the helm of the ship at Sunday’s red carpet at the JUNOs and taught me a thing or two! I’m grateful for and inspired by the leadership role she’s assumed on the PR side over the past year and I thoroughly enjoy talking strategy and planning with her. Aven Hoffarth lives and breathes management and is an absolute natural at it. I’m really honoured that she has brought Long Range Hustle into the family. Holy Holy have today unveiled the video for their latest single, ‘Elevator’, and have recently revealed details of their highly anticipated sophomore LP. The new album, ‘Paint’, is set for release on February 24, 2017, and is available for pre-order now – HERE.

The video was directed by ARIA nominated writer/director, Charlie Ford, (Courtney Barnett, Vance Joy), who also directed the clip for You Cannot Call For Love Like A Dog. Filmed in Sydney, Fordcomments, “The film was inspired by the key themes of memory, history and the undying connection that lovers share”. Timothy Carroll from Holy Holy adds, “The song has a story built into it so for this clip we wanted to just tell that story. So this clip is like a short film based on one night in the lives of two people who are ex-lovers seeing each other for the first time in a couple of years.”

Elevator’ propels the band’s sonic development into a new exploratory territory, with driving guitar lines, arpeggiated synths and a chorus that will not leave your head. It is the second single to be lifted off the forthcoming record, and an electrifying follow up to first single ‘Darwinism’, which reached #1 Most Played on Triple J.

It has been a remarkably eventful year for Holy Holy, who in November finished up an international tour in support of ‘Darwinism’ which included sold out shows all over the world, packed showcases at Reeperbahn festival in Germany, their third sold out London show, and an intimate performance of Darwinism for the world renowned Mahogany Sessions/Distiller Music in the UK and a performance on the DIY stage in Hamburg. Throughout the year the band have also been writing and recording their new LP, eagerly anticipated by both press and fans alike, which will be released in February 2017. Holy Holy’s debut album came in at #11 on the ARIA Chart, and the last few years have seen the band play steadily growing venues to packed out, adoring fans, and has also seen an exciting, much discussed development in the band’s songwriting and direction.

Both “Elevator” and “Darwinism” are eligible for voting in this year’s Triple J Hottest 100. You can vote here –

Praise for Elevator & reviews from their recent international Darwinism tour
“A driving relentless rock banger” – WILD N FREE, UK
“The band’s 2015 debut When The Storms Would Come was one of the most mature, well-crafted releases of the year. If new single Elevator is anything to go by, it sounds like the band is backing it up with another sensational release. The track slowly ascends to the heavens with a joyous guitar solo erupting out of the chorus, providing the song with the fuel needed to shoot onwards to a triumphant finish.” – HOWL & ECHOES
“Elevator is crammed with arpeggiated synth complimented perfectly by strong guitar riffs and a chorus that hasn’t left my head since I first heard it… Like an elevator, this band is ascending into one of the best bands around at the minute.” – MOJO 20, UK
“It’s another stellar slice of indie rock, with shimmery guitars and a chorus that should have you punching your fist in the air.” – SOUNDS OF OZ
“Elevator” is a classic upbeat burner that features swells of guitars and Timothy Carroll’s beautifully rich vocals…. The chorus will ring true of melancholy shoe-gaze rockers The War of Drugs- a substantial progression from Holy Holy’s earlier pastoral-rock sound. (Elevator) – THE AU REVIEW
“Last year saw Holy Holy gain worldwide success with a collection of songs showing raw power and songwriting talent. This talent continues to shine through in their live shows” – CREATION PRESS, UK
“Holy Holy put on a rock performance of biblical proportions. Oscar Dawson’s guitar skills won the night, receiving monumental praise from the bewildered punters with every riff. Holy Holy treated attendants to a lengthy set, energetically orchestrated by lead singer Timothy Carroll.” – THE MUSIC
“In a modern, music industry that is a perpetual fight for life and survival, Holy Holy are armed with adaptations that ensure they stand out from the pack.”  – SCENESTR
“The guitar-driven track, filled with exuberant synths and meticulous drum-work, easily serves the rich upbeat chorus which will immediately get you up on your feet. One or two hip sways to the catchy rhythms and smooth vocals, and you’re being left with a joyous sensation before even realising it.” – GIG GOER

Toronto, ON – December 1st, 2016 – Brighton, UK’s, As It Is, has released the third track, No Way Out, from their highly-anticipated sophomore album, okay., set to release January 20, 2017Digital and physical pre-orders are available now, where singles OkayPretty Little Distance, and No Way Out are all available as instant downloads with each pre-order.

No Way Out follows the album’s title track, and Pretty Little Distance, and deals with the same events and feelings that inspired the first single. Vocalist, Patty Walters, states, “No Way Out is about the desperation and exhaustion from struggling, when your best intentions and attempts seemingly lead you nowhere. Musically, the song is fast, dark, and aggressive, so we wrote lyrics that would parallel and compliment those qualities. Overall, our lyrics on this record are more honest and vulnerable than ever, and this song’s bridge especially is a prime example of that.”

To celebrate the release, the band will be doing a Live Chat on their Facebook page at 12pm PST, with the track going on digital platforms at 9pm PST.

okay. aims to bring a truly relatable and deeply personal story to the band’s audience — a conceptual world that puts listeners in the band’s shoes and conveys a common realization that it’s ‘okay’ to not be ‘okay.’ Working with producer Mike Green (Pierce The Veil, All Time Low), As It Is use the record to trek through intimate experiences surrounding their personal lives and everyday battles that they hope will resonate with fans in a unique way, leaving them with lasting encouragement and inspiration.

As It Is will kick off a string of headline dates in Australia on January 31, before heading out on an EU/UK tour as support to State Champs, starting on February 21. Scroll down for a full list of tour dates.

Small Feet Stream ‘Dreaming The Dream’ EP Via Pandora | Digital Only EP ‘Dreaming The Dream’ Out 12/9 Via Barsuk

“Lead single “Liar Behind The Sun” is a little more sprightly than what Small Feet usually do, and may remind you of the Shins just a bit.” – Brooklyn Vegan

Pandora has premiered the new EP from Small Feet entitled, ‘Dreaming The Dream’ which will be released on digital-only format 12/9 via Barsuk Records. Also be sure to check out their debut album ‘From Far Enough Away Everything Sounds Like The Ocean‘ which was released last year.

It seems baffling that a songwriter as adept as Stockholm’s Simon Stålhamre, the gentleman behind Small Feet, only released his debut From Far Enough Away Everything Sounds Like The Ocean last year. Things apparently don’t get finished when one’s interest is always sprinting to the next experiment, and Stålhamre’s stumble towards discovery began around the time he was 15, when he decided to quit school. Though he was – and remains – possessed of a natural intelligence and a gift for music, he was also shuffling a pack of demons that provoked an increasingly reclusive lifestyle. So, instead of attending school, he employed TV as his academic mentor – learning English from the American shows that dominated his small country’s schedules – while, all the time, building up a catalogue of songs.

After years of writing songs for himself and keeping tapes stored in a closet in his parents’ home, Stålhamre connected with ex-pat American Jacob Snavely and drummer Christopher Cantillo to form Small Feet.  The band recorded their debut From Far Enough Away Everything Sounds Like The Ocean in a home studio located in one of a cluster of historically protected, 18th century cabins on Södermalm, an island in central Stockholm. Owned by the government, the cabins are leased to artists in a typically Swedish gesture of social democracy, and Stålhamre’s uncle passed his contract on to his musical nephew. Just like his predecessor, Stålhamre calls it Kvastis – a contraction of its original name, Kvastmakartrapan, which refers to the broom makers who once occupied the cabins – and converted the humble building into a recording studio.

Released in 2015 on Barsuk Records the album received rave reviews and the band toured both Europe and the United States. While working on their follow-up (to be released in early 2017) the band revisited a few unfinished gems from the From Far Enough Away.. sessions to bring us the Dreaming The Dream EP.

Like Jason Molina, Stålhamre has a voice that can swim out of a sinking heart. His emotional subtlety calls upon the dry humour of Bill Callahan, and there’s a buoyancy to his language that floats his warm tenor, while at the same time allowing him to echo Daniel Johnston’s inspired innocence.   Tracks like the opener “Hymn”, which comes in at barely over a minute, show Stålhamre’s ability to state a simple beautiful truth with stunning minimalism.  While “A Winter Coat On Bare Bones” could have very well been a recently discovered Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere outtake.

Praise for Small Feet’s debut From Far Enough Away Everything Sounds Like The Ocean

“Both mighty and fragile … an arresting fusion of widescreen Americana and heart-tugging Nordic melancholy… excellent. (8/10)” – Uncut

“Quality Swedish folk pop trio led by Simon Stalhamre whose cracked tenor is a vessel for unsettling emotional truths.” (4 stars) – MOJO

“The debut album from Swedish folk rockers Small Feet, whose guitar-driven refrains call to mind Band of Horses and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.” – The New York Times

“Band to watch: Stockholm’s Small Feet. Crazy beautiful stuff.” – Russ Borris (WFUV)

Parcels shares new single + EP due January 27

LISTEN: “Older”
Parcels are back today to share the third single from their forthcoming EP, Hideout, due out January 27th on Maison Kitsune. “Older” is a step away from the band’s usual driving, disco feel and looks to a more intimate side of the five piece. Playful guitar and bass lines paired with lyrics full of self doubt make the track a bittersweet contrast. A desperate mood can be felt over the breezy tune, leaving an uncertainty that is worth revisiting.
Check out “Older” above and stay tuned for the full details on the forthcoming EP.
Praise for Parcels:

“Prepare to want to dance the way nobody has danced since flares were invented”
“Parcels’ avant pop is wholly engrossing yet difficult to define.”
“inspires daydreams of Daft Punk frolicking through colourful 70s roller discos.”
“Parcels make slick, funky synth pop morsels that melt in your ears”

“begs to be played on repeat”
About Parcels:
Parcels is Patrick Hetherington, Louie Swain, Noah Hill, Anatole Serret and Jules Crommelin. The five piece formed in 2014 during their final year of high school and recorded their first, self-produced EP. Well received in Australia and Europe the debut represented the first recording ever produced by its members, where wide synth soundscapes and an electronic rhythm section meet lively guitars and five part vocal harmony. Shortly after their first release, Parcels left Australia for Berlin where they currently reside. On stage, their live set is consistently energetic: a different, more organic spin on their tracks provides an electronic disco channeling the soulfulness of early Chic. Captivating, vital, and musically impressive.
