Interview | The Nursery [Nas Media]

14859887_694101420755341_2394009954399848914_o.jpg

We had the chance to chat with Alex Pulec of Toronto based pop rockers The Nursery after their performance at the Indie88 Music Awards during Canadian Music Week. They discussed the release of their debut album Life After Wartime, their win at the Jim Beam Make History Talent Search, and what’s next for the band. Read on to learn more about the band and what they will be up to. Be sure to watch the latest video for their single “Everybody’s Famous.” You can find the link here.

How does it feel to be the winners of the Jim Beam ‘Make History Talent Search”?

Blessed and privileged. The best part was that we got to discover the scary amount of brilliant Canadian artists, especially in Toronto, brewing under the surface of this city’s mainstream(ish) music scene. Better watch out world – In the next 4 years, Toronto’s independent music is going to be unstoppable!

At which point did the reality set in that you would be able to do music for a living?

Really hard question. There are so many moments in a band’s career where you think “this is it!”. Truth is, things never pan out exactly how you expect them to. Especially when you’re going through the motions for the first time and your getting excited about every opportunity. Once we were put in front of a couple of large audiences who had no idea who were and ended up winning them over. I feel as long as we can have a honest and genuine relationship with any audience and play our music well they SHOULD be able to at least understand what we’re about. They don’t NEED to like us. Artists who make a good living performing and writing music aren’t loved by every single person out there. Seems obvious…but learning that first hand was very freeing and helped me realize that as long as we stuck to our guns and never gave up, it could happen.

Who are your musical influences?

Anyone who works hard at forging their own paths rather than falling into the tired avenues set up by bottom feeder types in the industry. I don’t like how emerging artists get treated generally by certain industry establishments. It’s really easy to manipulate the emotions of young hopes and dreams into doing things that aren’t in their best interests. Now with the internet, new artists are getting smarter and more savvy when it comes to how to run their band or show. I’m inspired by the ones who do it their own way. You know, where it’s usually a slow start, and you get a lot of folks who may look at you strange, but nothing feels better than proving them wrong and inspiring others with your story.

How has your music evolved since you first began playing?

In general the music is taking more and more risks as time goes on. Getting a little weirder, more freaky and a little darker. Ultimately, it’s become unequivocally more “Nursery”. We’re getting harder to put in a box while becoming more of ourselves. It’s a result of becoming more confident as writers and performers. Letting go of the shackles of fear and insecurity is so exciting when your creating. Way easier said than done. When becoming yourself, the identity flourishes.

What are your future plans for The Nursery?

Releasing our debut full length record! It’s going to be called Life After Wartime. It’s about beginning a new life. A changing of the guard. It’s about looking forward, not backward. instead of running away, embrace it.

DEBUT ALBUM GIVE IT BACK TO YOU
NOMINATED FOR BEST CONTEMPORARY BLUES ALBUM
AT 2017 GRAMMY AWARDS

“…showing off a down-and-dirty sound and megawatts of onstage intensity.”
Rolling Stone

“Raw emotion, dedication, honesty and hard work. These are just some of the words that best describe Los Angeles rock trio The Record Company.”Paste

Toronto, ON – March 15th, 2016 – Los Angeles-based, GRAMMY-nominated breakout band, The Record Company, are set to play their first Canadian dates since the release of their debut album, Give It Back To You. The group will be supporting John Mayer on his Montreal and Toronto tour stops in May. See below for complete details.

Give It Back To You experienced great success since its release in February 2016 on Concord Records. After 42 weeks strong on both the Billboard Top New Artist Heatseekers Chart and the Nielsen Alternative New Artist Chart, the roots/rock trio, The Record Company, scored a GRAMMY Award nomination for the album in the category of Best Contemporary Blues Album. Today, the album has moved over 4,500 units in Canada, including streams, and now the band will bring their live set to local fans.

The band, comprised of Chris Vos (guitar, lead vocals, harmonica), Alex Stiff (bass, guitar, vocals) and Marc Cazorla (drums, piano, vocals) – unleashed its debut album, Give It Back to You, on February 12th , 2016, and immediately struck a power chord nationwide. The album’s first single, Off The Ground, garnered extensive airplay in the alternative formats, achieving the coveted #1 AAA spot, where it remained for two consecutive weeks. The single was recently featured in a Hockey Night In Canada montage that aired on March 11th.  Their latest single, Baby I’m Broken, premiered on Sirius XM’s Spectrum, and was serviced to radio today.

The Record Company’s popular success has been matched by enthusiastic and unanimous critical acclaim. “Caught halfway between the stomp of mid-century rock & roll and the soulful kick of Delta blues, the Record Company kick up a raw, rootsy racket,” raved Rolling Stone. “The blues may be nothing new, but the Record Company wring new life out of old traditions.” Entertainment Weekly wrote. “The scuzzy, 10-track set meshes the group’s biggest influences—the early electric blues rock n’ roll of John Lee Hooker, staccato lyrical delivery akin to The Stooges frontman Iggy Pop, and Rolling Stones-style grooves.”

What’s more, The Record Company have rocked the airwaves with a series of high profile TV appearances, including CBS’ Late Show with Stephen Colbert and TBS’ Conan, not to mention countless radio sessions and live concert broadcasts on SiriusXM, NPR’s World Café Live, and Chicago’s WXRT.

SYDNEY DRUM & PERCUSSION SHOW SET TO SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL [MAY 27 & 28]

SYDNEY DRUM & PERCUSSION SHOW SET TO SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL

ROSEHILL GARDENS GRAND PAVILION ON MAY 27 & 28

Capture.PNG

Australian Music Association has today announced the inaugural Sydney Drum & Percussion Show set to engulf the Rosehill Gardens Grand Pavilion on May 27 and 28.  Proudly presented by Australian Musician, the monster exhibition promises to be an electrifying presentation of all things hit.

Boasting an impressive live performance program with some of the world’s best players and biggest names including Thomas Lang (George Michael, Tina Turner, Peter Gabriel), Virgil Donati (Tommy Emmanuel, Steve Vai), Michael Schack (Netsky) and more (with Lang and Donati playing together for the first time ever), the show will also feature a huge array of drum gear and brands and will act as the country’s largest pop-up drum and percussion shop.  You can see, try and buy drum kits, cymbals, orchestral and traditional percussion, electronic percussion, hand percussion and accessories from all the major brands, plus never-before-seen gear.  There’ll be some tasty home grown and handmade gear too.

Run by the same team that put on the annual Melbourne Guitar Show (MGS) and based on the successful MGS model, the Sydney Drum & Percussion Show will also host information seminars, demonstrations, and live performances from Australia’s most talented drummers and percussion players including Lucius Borich (Cog), Lozz Benson (Urthboy, Drummer Queens), Stan Bicknell (Kimbra, Miami Horror) and more.  From double-kick drummers, groove and touch drummers and jazz stylists, to exotic percussion players, orchestral percussionists, and hard hittin’ rock n rollers, there’ll be something for everyone.

The voice of the Australian music products industry, the Australian Music Association (AMA) is thrilled to present this drum-centric weekend.  “There’s so much about percussion, it’s the world’s most accessible form of music – people take their first steps in music through percussion,” says AMA CEO Rob Walker.  “We are excited to showcase our industry’s products and the wealth of local talent that Sydney and Australia has to offer, as well as international guests – three of the best in the world!  We seek to educate and entertain, and showcase and grow our drum and percussion community.”

Punters will have the opportunity to participate in drum circles and other hands on percussion workshops, see Australia’s leading percussion ensembles, Taikoz and Synergy Percussion, as well as leading student percussion ensembles from The Sydney Conservatorium and combined school’s ensemble, Drumfill.  They can experience the latest electronic drum technology, meet a stack of the industry’s finest drum and percussion players, take part in workshops on drumming for fitness and wellbeing, performance clinics, panels and more.

Additionally, the 2017 Sydney Drum & Percussion Show will provide a hands-on chance to see, hear and play a broad range of the world’s favourite brands.  It will also see exhibitors offering great show deals.

If you can hit it, ring it, shake rattle and roll it, it’ll be at the Sydney Drum & Percussion Show.

The Sydney Drum & Percussion Show will be held at Rosehill Gardens Grand Pavilion on May 27 & 28, 2017

Holy Holy have today unveiled the video for their latest single, ‘Elevator’, and have recently revealed details of their highly anticipated sophomore LP. The new album, ‘Paint’, is set for release on February 24, 2017, and is available for pre-order now – HERE.

The video was directed by ARIA nominated writer/director, Charlie Ford, (Courtney Barnett, Vance Joy), who also directed the clip for You Cannot Call For Love Like A Dog. Filmed in Sydney, Fordcomments, “The film was inspired by the key themes of memory, history and the undying connection that lovers share”. Timothy Carroll from Holy Holy adds, “The song has a story built into it so for this clip we wanted to just tell that story. So this clip is like a short film based on one night in the lives of two people who are ex-lovers seeing each other for the first time in a couple of years.”

Elevator’ propels the band’s sonic development into a new exploratory territory, with driving guitar lines, arpeggiated synths and a chorus that will not leave your head. It is the second single to be lifted off the forthcoming record, and an electrifying follow up to first single ‘Darwinism’, which reached #1 Most Played on Triple J.

It has been a remarkably eventful year for Holy Holy, who in November finished up an international tour in support of ‘Darwinism’ which included sold out shows all over the world, packed showcases at Reeperbahn festival in Germany, their third sold out London show, and an intimate performance of Darwinism for the world renowned Mahogany Sessions/Distiller Music in the UK and a performance on the DIY stage in Hamburg. Throughout the year the band have also been writing and recording their new LP, eagerly anticipated by both press and fans alike, which will be released in February 2017. Holy Holy’s debut album came in at #11 on the ARIA Chart, and the last few years have seen the band play steadily growing venues to packed out, adoring fans, and has also seen an exciting, much discussed development in the band’s songwriting and direction.

Both “Elevator” and “Darwinism” are eligible for voting in this year’s Triple J Hottest 100. You can vote here – http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/hottest100/16/

Praise for Elevator & reviews from their recent international Darwinism tour
“A driving relentless rock banger” – WILD N FREE, UK
“The band’s 2015 debut When The Storms Would Come was one of the most mature, well-crafted releases of the year. If new single Elevator is anything to go by, it sounds like the band is backing it up with another sensational release. The track slowly ascends to the heavens with a joyous guitar solo erupting out of the chorus, providing the song with the fuel needed to shoot onwards to a triumphant finish.” – HOWL & ECHOES
“Elevator is crammed with arpeggiated synth complimented perfectly by strong guitar riffs and a chorus that hasn’t left my head since I first heard it… Like an elevator, this band is ascending into one of the best bands around at the minute.” – MOJO 20, UK
“It’s another stellar slice of indie rock, with shimmery guitars and a chorus that should have you punching your fist in the air.” – SOUNDS OF OZ
“Elevator” is a classic upbeat burner that features swells of guitars and Timothy Carroll’s beautifully rich vocals…. The chorus will ring true of melancholy shoe-gaze rockers The War of Drugs- a substantial progression from Holy Holy’s earlier pastoral-rock sound. (Elevator) – THE AU REVIEW
“Last year saw Holy Holy gain worldwide success with a collection of songs showing raw power and songwriting talent. This talent continues to shine through in their live shows” – CREATION PRESS, UK
“Holy Holy put on a rock performance of biblical proportions. Oscar Dawson’s guitar skills won the night, receiving monumental praise from the bewildered punters with every riff. Holy Holy treated attendants to a lengthy set, energetically orchestrated by lead singer Timothy Carroll.” – THE MUSIC
“In a modern, music industry that is a perpetual fight for life and survival, Holy Holy are armed with adaptations that ensure they stand out from the pack.”  – SCENESTR
“The guitar-driven track, filled with exuberant synths and meticulous drum-work, easily serves the rich upbeat chorus which will immediately get you up on your feet. One or two hip sways to the catchy rhythms and smooth vocals, and you’re being left with a joyous sensation before even realising it.” – GIG GOER

AS IT IS RELEASE NEW SONG
NO WAY OUT FROM
FORTHCOMING ALBUM OKAY.

NEW ALBUM OUT JANUARY 20, 2017

Toronto, ON – December 1st, 2016 – Brighton, UK’s, As It Is, has released the third track, No Way Out, from their highly-anticipated sophomore album, okay., set to release January 20, 2017Digital and physical pre-orders are available now, where singles OkayPretty Little Distance, and No Way Out are all available as instant downloads with each pre-order.

No Way Out follows the album’s title track, and Pretty Little Distance, and deals with the same events and feelings that inspired the first single. Vocalist, Patty Walters, states, “No Way Out is about the desperation and exhaustion from struggling, when your best intentions and attempts seemingly lead you nowhere. Musically, the song is fast, dark, and aggressive, so we wrote lyrics that would parallel and compliment those qualities. Overall, our lyrics on this record are more honest and vulnerable than ever, and this song’s bridge especially is a prime example of that.”

To celebrate the release, the band will be doing a Live Chat on their Facebook page at 12pm PST, with the track going on digital platforms at 9pm PST.

okay. aims to bring a truly relatable and deeply personal story to the band’s audience — a conceptual world that puts listeners in the band’s shoes and conveys a common realization that it’s ‘okay’ to not be ‘okay.’ Working with producer Mike Green (Pierce The Veil, All Time Low), As It Is use the record to trek through intimate experiences surrounding their personal lives and everyday battles that they hope will resonate with fans in a unique way, leaving them with lasting encouragement and inspiration.

As It Is will kick off a string of headline dates in Australia on January 31, before heading out on an EU/UK tour as support to State Champs, starting on February 21. Scroll down for a full list of tour dates.

PARCELS SHARES NEW SINGLE

HIDEOUT
EP DUE JANUARY 27 VIA MAISON KITSUNÉ

unnamed-9.jpg

LISTEN: “Older”
Parcels are back today to share the third single from their forthcoming EP, Hideout, due out January 27th on Maison Kitsune. “Older” is a step away from the band’s usual driving, disco feel and looks to a more intimate side of the five piece. Playful guitar and bass lines paired with lyrics full of self doubt make the track a bittersweet contrast. A desperate mood can be felt over the breezy tune, leaving an uncertainty that is worth revisiting.
Check out “Older” above and stay tuned for the full details on the forthcoming EP.
Praise for Parcels:

“Prepare to want to dance the way nobody has danced since flares were invented”
– NOISEY

“Parcels’ avant pop is wholly engrossing yet difficult to define.”
– CLASH
“inspires daydreams of Daft Punk frolicking through colourful 70s roller discos.”
– WONDERLAND

“Parcels make slick, funky synth pop morsels that melt in your ears”

 STEREOGUM
“begs to be played on repeat”
– THE LINE OF BEST FIT
About Parcels:
Parcels is Patrick Hetherington, Louie Swain, Noah Hill, Anatole Serret and Jules Crommelin. The five piece formed in 2014 during their final year of high school and recorded their first, self-produced EP. Well received in Australia and Europe the debut represented the first recording ever produced by its members, where wide synth soundscapes and an electronic rhythm section meet lively guitars and five part vocal harmony. Shortly after their first release, Parcels left Australia for Berlin where they currently reside. On stage, their live set is consistently energetic: a different, more organic spin on their tracks provides an electronic disco channeling the soulfulness of early Chic. Captivating, vital, and musically impressive.

“The duo makes blistering, super infectious, feel-good lo-fi garage-pop/punk rippers…that feel like fleeting, sub-2:00 bursts of hazy sunshine that never overstay their welcome.”

-Gorilla Vs. Bear

” On Vol. 1, the duo effortlessly shreds through jittery, unnamed songs, possibly unearthed from a cassette tape found in the glovebox of your uncle’s Firebird.”
-Stereogum

“A significantly more lo-fi and muddier sound than their Hoops output; Drew & Jack together blaze up a stormy set of chords that will instantly appeal to all of your tough & delicate sensibilities at once.” – Impose Magazine

““Track #6,” is hyperactive and very catchy”
-Brooklyn Vegan

Today Permit has streamed their debut EP entitled ‘Vol. 1’ via Gorilla Vs. Bear. The EP stream follows the band’s two singles, “Track #6” which premiered on Brooklyn Vegan and “Track #1”  which premiered on Stereogum. “Vol. 1” is out officially 12/2 via Fat Possum Records. Permit is a Bloomington, IN based duo featuring Drew and Jack. Their debut 7” reflects their love of 70’s-80’s classic rock, punk, and power pop. Think Thin Lizzy, but twice as fast.
