The first release of a packed 2018, Jason Ross returns to Anjunabeats with the vocal smash “Through It All,” featuring Fiora.

Some productions take longer than others, “Through It All” was just such a track. “This one was kind of a journey for me,” Jason explains. “It started 2 years ago as an intro song for my sets. It always got a great reaction, and I knew it was something I had to build into a full track.”

The instrumental went through over 50 different versions, until this past September when it was finally complete. “When I played it at The Gorge with Jeff (Seven Lions). Seeing the crowd’s reaction there, that’s when I knew it was done,” he recalled.

But the tune needed a vocal. Enter Fiora. “She came to my studio and we just got in this flow and it all just came together then and there. Her vocals really hit the core of what the track was about for me: overcoming obstacles and staying true to who you are and where you’re going.”

Jason has multiple releases planned for the next 6 months, the result of a fall and winter spent deep in studio work. Some boast the classic Jason Ross sound, while others will see the producer breaking new ground. What made sense to him though, was to begin it here, with “Through It All.”

Jason Ross is on tour this spring, dates below and tickets available here.

WATCH & SHARE: The Low Anthem – Album Trailer

The Low Anthem have announced their new LP ‘The Salt Doll Went To Measure The Depth Of The Sea’.

One second you’re dozing off in the passenger seat on the way to a gig, and the next, there’s fire and hell flames and black smoke and your face is bleeding and you can’t see, and you can’t process information, and you think it’s all over.” Jeff Prystowsky is describing one of the scariest moments in his life, as The Low Anthem’s tour van crashed and subsequently wiped out Prystowsky for several weeks, as well as wrecking loads of their gear and instruments in the process.

However, the accident also acted as an inadvertent impetus for their latest record whilst Prystowsky was in recovery: a John Cage-influenced concept record. A beautiful, elegiac and largely acoustic – though peppered with subtle yet immersive electronics and humming ambience – album of twelve tracks that barely stretch past the two-minute mark. Recalling the more progressive moments of artists such as Sufjan Stevens and Lambchop, it’s a record of a deep richness, loaded with extreme subtleties and with a space and delicacy counter to the group’s previous dense and complex album.

The album feels like a new palate for the group and comes at the end of a period of profound change and evolution. Not only did the van crash cancel their tour (after just four dates) but, combined with some record company troubles, it led to the album they were due to tour all but disappearing. Eyeland was the group’s deeply experimental 2016 album, one that was their first in several years and one that was also a direct response to a world in which they had found themselves but didn’t really want to be.

Prystowsky formed the band with Ben Knox Miller and after the huge success of their 2007 debut album, What The Crow Brings, the band found themselves signed to Nonesuch and Bella Union for their even more successful follow-up Oh My God, Charlie Darwin. They toured the world and were reluctantly lumped in with the so-called “folk revival”. However, night-after-night of performing their early material was not ultimately where they wanted to land. “The moment was losing its mystery. We were scared of becoming robots,” the band said after six years of reflection.

They returned to their hometown of Providence, Rhode Island back in 2012 and instead poured their energy into their local community by restoring a vaudeville-era theatre and building their own recording studio within. The band were still enamoured with music itself and holed down here for years experimenting and learning to record and produce what would become Eyeland but they were no longer the group that they had once been. “It’s like eating stale bread,” Prystowsky says. “Fresh bread is better. You want to cook with fresh ingredients and eat it while it’s still warm. If you wait too long, the moment is gone. So you reheat it but with each reheating, a little bit is lost…until it can’t be reheated anymore.”

The pair are involved with the running of The Columbus Theatre, they help book and promote shows and are in attendance for every new production, burrowing themselves at a grassroots level into their community. It has become an important place for them in terms of an inspirational creative space. “It’s a magical place with a long history,” Prystowsky says.  “I like to call it a palace of music. You’re walking into a theatre from almost a hundred years ago, still intact, built for the acoustics of music, pre-the invention of the PA. It’s so unlike anything in the 21st century that it ignites your creative muscles to work. You immediately lose your frame of reference, in a good way.”

Five years on since moving back to Providence, building a recording studio then recording a deeply experimental, stylistic u-turn of a record in Eyeland before having to ditch the whole thing after a near miss accident, the band are now finally into a groove of their own, under their own terms. They are settled and have found themselves again both in terms of a sense of place as well as musically.

This feeling of comfort, confidence and newfound identity shines through on The Salt Doll Went To Measure The Depth Of The Sea, an album that was triggered when Knox Miller was reading John Cage’s biography Where The Heart Beats, by Kay Larsen. He soon became transfixed by the salt doll fable he came across. The salt doll fable basically tells the story of a doll that wants to know itself, and what it’s made of. A teacher tells it, “salt comes from the ocean,” so it goes to the sea.  When the doll puts its toe in, it knows something, but loses its toe. Then it puts its foot in, knows even more but loses its foot…and so on, until it’s completely dissolved, never to return to the shore.

This fable soon blossomed into a full album that Knox Miller wrote on stripped down equipment (given that all the band’s usual stuff had been destroyed or damaged in the crash) and the end result was an album that, according to Prystowsky: “Is a concept album with a story arc weaving through the songs like a constellation. It’s an underwater circular journey to the bottom of the sea following the salt doll who, attempting to measure the sea (and thus, know its true origins), in the end, becomes part of it. Along the way this non-human, conscious chemical compound, encounters all kinds of fantastical oceanic things.”

Knox Miller wrote the song cycle whilst Prystowsky was recovering from a concussion and it became a part of him in the process. A project to immerse himself into completely, mirroring the tale of the salt doll but also filling the void left by the absence of his usual creative partner (who soon returned to good health to help finish the record.) “I ate it, I slept it” Ben says of the process.

It finds the Low Anthem of 2017 a vastly different band from the one that emerged 10 years ago with their debut.  One that has experienced more ups and downs that many would manage in an entire career but also one that now feels settled in their skin and only interested in venturing toward the horizon instead of re-treading old ground.

Gioli & Assia Talk Borderline and Producing! [Heard It From Nas: Interview]

We had the chance to chat with Italian tech-house DJ’s and producers, Giolì & Assia! We asked them about their new single ‘Borderline’ and learned more about their producing process. Read on below to learn more about this Italian duo!

g

We know you have just come out with your new single ‘Borderline’. What was it like for you and Assia writing this song? What was the creative process/inspiration behind it?

‘Borderline’ is the second track in our upcoming debut album, Instantanee. It tells the story of someone who can’t live with or without their partner because they are both the poison and the cure of their illness. The storyteller has to live with an unstable sense of self-identity and the feeling of emptiness that they would experience if their partner were to leave them. Although they know the pain that remaining in the relationship is causing them, they can’t give it up and instead choose to escape reality by telling themself, “close your eyes and try to leave the world behind”. However, unlike the lyrics, the music communicates a sense of revolt. The ethnic percussion and beat create a pressing rhythm, which conveys strength and recovery.

What do you need to have around you and/or a location that you need to be in for you to start your song-writing and producing process?

Giolì: We are used to producing in our studio where we have all the instruments and gear that we need. We usually begin the production process by creating the music and melody first, followed by the lyrics. However, sometimes we’ll do things a little differently. For instance when I started working on “Paradise To Share”, I wrote the lyrics with the help of the guitar in my little room. It really depends on the moment.

Assia: Sometimes it depends on finding new sounds and how much they inspire us. If they inspire us everything comes easily.

What is one thing that your fans don’t know about you?

So many. We love puppies and Disney cartoons. We both love Indonesia, and we love to draw and paint.

What made you decide to go the non-traditional route and create your own label agency [Diesis], instead of being signed to a major agency like other artists in your genre?

We didn’t have a choice. We had to do it to be able to share our music with our fans because no other label wanted to put our records out. We are very proud of our path! Having a label is very comforting, but the downside is that we’re limited in our audience reach, which is something that a major label doesn’t have to struggle with.

How has your music evolved since you first started producing and song writing?

We started producing about two years ago. Since I’ve been playing instruments for so long, composing music definitely came naturally. The most difficult part was learning how to use Logic Pro X. Our music has evolved since we first start producing but you can definitely find elements of our old tracks in our new ones.

Who is your biggest music inspiration? Who do you have a lot of respect for?
We’ve answered this question so many times. We listen to many different kinds of music so we draw inspiration from lots of artists ranging from Paul Kalkbrenner to The XX to Alt-J.

What is one song that never gets old for you, no matter how many times you hear it?
Giolì: Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen
Assia: I’m in love with all Coldplay songs, especially “Lovers In Japan”.

AFSHeeN’s ‘Uncrazy’ Dance Remix by Lulleaux Out Now

AFSHEEN & REBECCA FERGUSON RELEASE AN ‘UNCRAZY’ DEEP HOUSE REMIX

LULLEAUX REMIX AVAILABLE NOW VIA

DIRTY SOUL / BE YOURSELF MUSIC

 Picture1.png

After receiving an overwhelming positive response to the late 2017 release of ‘Uncrazy’ and ‘Uncrazy (Acoustic)’, AFSHeeN & Rebecca Ferguson recruited talented Dutch producer Lulleaux to add a deep house twist to the track.

STREAM: AFSHEEN & REBECCA FERGUSON – ‘UNCRAZY’ (LULLEAUX REMIX)

Lulleaux’s take on the track provides an upbeat soundscape that echoes the sounds of a warm summer day. Rebecca Ferguson’s powerful, yet silky vocals fit perfectly with the deep house rework. In contrast to the original, which is much more emotional and mellow, this dance-friendly version is perfect for those who are a looking for a new go-to “feel-good anthem”.

STREAM: AFSHEEN & REBECCA FERGUSON – ‘UNCRAZY’ (ACOUSTIC)

AFSHeeN caught the eye of music’s A-listers including the likes of Madonna, Chris Brown, Take That, and Selena Gomez with his outstanding songwriting skills. In 2016, he decided to try his hand at releasing his own records and it’s safe to say that the move worked in his favor. With a total count of 860K streams on Apple Music and a featured spot on highly regarded YouTube channel Mr. Suicide Sheep, the original version of  ‘Uncrazy’ further reinforced the fact that AFSHeeN AFSHeeN is just as good in the studio as he is on paper. Responding to the initial reception for ‘Uncrazy’, the pair released a stunning lyric video that encompasses the rawness of Ferguson’s lyrics.

Gusgus Releases ‘Lies Are More Flexible’ Album – Out Now via Oroom

GUSGUS RELEASE ‘LIES ARE MORE FLEXIBLE’ ALBUM

OUT NOW VIA OROOM

unnamed (4).jpg

Globally renowned Icelandic electronic act Gusgus are back with the release of their striking, tenth studio album ‘Lies Are More Flexible’.  This latest composition showcases the collective’s aptitude for fusing a broad range of musical styles and emotions with both finesse and dynamism. The 8-track LP is available now via Gusgus’ label Oroom.

Listen: Gusgus – ‘Lies Are More Flexible’ LP

The LP draws influence from far and wide, resulting in a diverse mix of ambient, down-tempo, progressive dance and neo-electronic production infused with attitude from 80’s Italodisco and Synthwave. With band members Biggi Veira and Daníel Ágúst at the helm, ‘Lies Are More Flexible’guides the listener on an emotional journey through a sizzling spectrum of synthesized arpeggios, rave stabs, irresistible beats and spine-tingling vocals.

Featherlight kicks off the album, with an epic arpeggiated synthline, seemingly echoing through an endless cavern before a driving 4/4 kick enters the soundscape, and introduces the tone of the album. The filter opens on the synth as we hear Daníel Ágúst’s vocals for the first time drifting atop the machine-heavy composition below. A sombre melody in the breakdown instantly captures the mood of the album, setting the listener on a guided course.  Don’t Know How to Love continues with an insatiable groove, in a more down-tempo and inquisitive nature after the crescendo of Featherlight, with backing vocals supplied by critic-favourite John Grant. Fireworks amps up the energy once again with a club ready groove, driving percussion and dynamic synth stabs.

unnamed (5)

Lifetime dials up the euphoria that Gusgus is known for, with Biggi’s melody perfectly harmonising Daníel’s layered, reverb heavy vocals. No Manual marks the beginning of the instrumental section of the album, an introspective and emotional track that pounds into the listener’s consciousness at 100 beats per minute. The titular track Lies Are More Flexibleis another instrumental piece exuding the masterful control that Biggi Veira commands of his analog hardware, invoking an 80s synthwave aesthetic. As we approach the final elements of the album, Towards Storm provides as a metaphoric introduction before plunging into the groove of Fuelan addictive synth work out, encapsulating the theme of the album and bringing it to a neat and accomplished finale.

With a career spanning over two decades the band’s production output has explored a diverse array of possibilities within the electronic music sphere, with a rotating cast of members and a patchwork of different themes, all the while maintaining the highest quality. This latest LP is the first studio album release from Gusgus since their 2014 hit ‘Mexico’, with the four years between spent touring the globe while honing their sound through self-released demos and remixes.

Gusgus are one of the most sought after and longstanding electronic acts from Iceland. Armed with a legendary, must-see live show that encompasses all the elements that they are known for, on stage Gusgus extend their tracks and warp their soundscapes in a way that is unique to each performance. World-renowned for their genre-defying style, an eclectic infusion of modern club culture and echoes of the past, they have remixed legendary acts such as Depeche Mode, Björk and Sigur Rós, and have consistently found increasing relevance within an ever-changing electronic music scene, carving their own fortune and sound that is further exemplified by the release of ‘Lies Are More Flexible.’
